Hope everyone had a great weekend! My weekend was pretty low-key. I mostly spent it catching up on work since I was gone for some of last week at my parents’ house. One of my lovely blogger-friends, Candice Nikeia recently tagged me in the “blogger behind the scenes” tag. I thought it would be fun to share a glimpse of my life as a blogger behind the scenes!
Where do you blog?
I do the written part of my blog in my apartment either on my couch or on my office desk in the bedroom. Occasionally, I enjoy switching things up a bit and working in cafes and libraries. This summer, I want to try to work by the pool often so I can get a tan while I’m at it! When it comes to taking photos for my outfit posts, my go-to is exploring my area in Los Feliz. Sometimes, I will venture out to explore other areas like Joshua Tree, Malibu, Venice, Santa Monica, DTLA Arts District… basically everywhere around LA! I also love snapping photos when I’m traveling, of course. Seeing new places can really give a new perspective and inspiration for blog topics.
Where do you find inspiration for your posts?
There’s not one single destination I could name for you when it comes to where I find inspiration — because it is EVERYWHERE! Inspiration will also depend on the type of post I’m trying to write. For example, an outfit post could be inspired by the latest lookbook to a brand that I really love, a season, or a trend that I’m coveting. A more personal or lifestyle post could be inspired by something I’ve recently felt or observed, or general life experiences I’ve had. This specific post was inspired by Candice! Thanks babe! <3 You all should check her out on Instagram if you don’t already follow her. 😉
How long does it take you to do a blog post?
The amount of time it takes for me to do a blog post will vary depending on what I’m trying to achieve. If I’m stuck in a creative rut and don’t know what to write about, it could take me days. But that’s a whole other story.
For outfit posts, most of my time is spent shooting and getting quality photos. Quality is really important to me and my blog. Why? Because often times, I’m working for brands who select me as their influencer because of what I can deliver. After photos are done, it’s pretty easy to put together a blurb or two about my look and maybe give a few style tips. Shooting can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. 15 minutes is when I’m just doing one look close to my apartment, and anything more than that may entail more than one look and commute time.
For a post that is more heavy on writing and less on photography, then I usually can just hash out what I’m trying to write within an hour, and spend another 30 minutes to an hour to edit and make sure everything is good before publishing. For these posts, I usually pick one or a few stock images to go with them. For my favorite free stock image resources, see my recent post here!
In short, blogging is not an easy task and I definitely invest a ton of time into producing quality work. I would say the average amount of time I put into any post in general is 3 hours. This includes brainstorming, shooting (if needed), writing, and editing.
Do you plan your blog posts? If so, how?
Yes, I try to plan as much as I can because I’m naturally a planner, and someone with OCD at that. I try to schedule out my blog posts one week in advance, and typically try to hash these posts out on the weekends. That way, I can focus on the social media aspect during the week while working on other things, like e-mails and taking photos. Because places are less crowded during the week while everyone is at work (versus the weekend where touristy spots are always filled), I try to complete the photoshoot aspect of my blog then.
What kind of camera do you use?
I work with a professional photographer at all times on my outfit posts, so it will depend on who I’m shooting with and what that photographer is using. My boyfriend shoots most of my outfit posts and he typically uses the 70-200mm (telephoto) lens on his Nikon D3S. Occasionally, he likes to switch things up a bit and use a 50mm or a wide angle lens. Stock images that I take on my own are on my iPhone 6. The stock photos of me in this post were taken by my friend Marlena who uses an 85mm on her Canon!
What editing programs do you use?
I LOVE VSCO Cam and Snapseed. I alternate between these two if the photos are taken on my phone! Sometimes, I’ll even use both. For example, I’ll first open a photo in Snapseed to add sharpness and enhance colors. Then, I’ll save the image and open that new image on VSCO, where I use a filter for a more “film effect.” If I have to edit photos from a camera, I use Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. While I do have a good eye for what looks good and what does not, my editing skills are not the best. Luckily, I work with professional photographers who do the work for me!
Do you use a notebook to track your ideas?
I have a notebook where I write down topic ideas as I brainstorm them. Sometimes, I will go on Bloglovin’ to get some inspiration for topics. Be sure to follow me there to not miss a single post!
Do you take your pictures?
I really admire bloggers who can set up a tripod and timer to take their photos. I can’t imagine getting the angles right (which is so important to me) doing this all on my own. With that said… no, I don’t take my own photos. I have professional photographers take and edit my photos if I’m in them. If it’s a stock image or a “from where I stand” shot, then I take it with my iPhone. DSLRs are too complicated for me.
What’s your favorite type of blog post to write?
Since Style Lullaby is mostly a style blog, I enjoy sharing my favorite outfits and trends most! 🙂 However, I do like the occasional variety and love writing more personal posts, too.
Who knows about your blog?
I’ve noticed that more people know about my blog than I think! I originally started this as a hobby for myself to document my take on fashion. Now though, somehow my friends, friends of friends, family, friends of family, people on social media, and people around the world know about it. And if you somehow stumbled across this post, then you know about it, too! It blows my mind how connected the Internet makes us these days. My goal now is to make this a platform for people to relate and connect with others!
Are you an organized or messy blogger?
Definitely organized. I can’t stand working in a busy chaotic environment. I focus best when there are no distractions (except music because that gets me in the mood).
Biggest blogging pet peeve?
I’d have to say my biggest blogging pet peeve is when girls who blog in a similar field are secretly super competitive, almost maliciously. The way I see it is, there’s plenty of room for everyone — everyone has their own style, own look, and own perspective on things. Everyone has their own path, and one person’s path and technique to success will not be the same as someone else trying to pursue the same thing. With that said, I think it’s better to just be supportive and spread positive energy to and around others! At the end of the day, you are remembered for how you make people feel. Luckily, I’ve found many people who support me as an individual and Style Lullaby. For that, I’m extremely blessed!
