I have always lived in a world of color when it comes to my wardrobe, and especially more so since moving to Palm Springs. Often times, people are afraid to wear colors out of their comfort zone because they think it might look odd. When styled the right way though, just about any color can look chic. If you’re looking to incorporate splashes of color in your outfits this spring and summer, here are some pointers to help you get started!
Lately, I have been obsessed with fruit printed clothing. Doesn’t matter if I actually like the fruit or not — they are just too cute. Something about those cherry dresses and pineapple tops in stores just catch my eye every time I’m out shopping. Adding some fruit prints in your outfit is a fun way to not only add color but also personality! FYI – I scored this watermelon button down top at a local boutique and knew I had to have it. It actually has a tie-front in case I want to style it that way, but for this outfit I simply tucked it in under my A-line denim skirt. I used to hate the color yellow, but have become more comfortable with it since wearing mustard often last fall/winter. The yellow & red watermelon combo adds just the perfect amount of color to my look.
Fun fact: I don’t even like watermelons! Shocker, I know… everyone makes fun of me for it. I’m more of a berry kinda’ gal.
Florals for Spring… groundbreaking, right?! But seriously though, you can never go wrong with floral prints. They come in all sorts of colors, and a variety of styles… and you can find them anywhere — even your local Target! I personally prefer maxis because they’re easy to throw on and are comfortable to wear all year round in California. In the summer time, I like showing a bit more skin (gotta get that tan!) and wearing shorter dresses or skirts. While there’s nothing wrong with mixing prints, I’ve always been one to find printed tops to look best with a more simple, solid-colored bottom (and vice versa). But, there are no rules in personal style 😉 At the end of the day, balance is key!
This is another one I became familiar with after moving to Palm Springs. That and, the retro vibes coming back in stores have gotten more people sporting the rainbow stripe trend! If you aren’t a print kind of gal but would like to add color to your look without trying too hard, stripes may be a solid bet. When picking out striped pieces, I try to go for vertical stripes because they emphasize slimness and length on the body. But, I definitely have a few horizontal striped tops and sweaters that I adore too. If you feel that a full-on rainbow striped dress is too much, you can always opt for a tee that maybe has some colorful stripes on the side, and wear it with a classic pair of denim shorts. Or, you can opt for rainbow shorts and wear it with a plain white tee! Contrary to belief, it’s quite easy to create balance with this trend.
Need some more time to warm up to colorful clothing? Try accessorizing your look with a bright colored bag. You could even wear all black with a bright red bag for example, and get a nice pop of color that way. Recently, I’ve been expanding my bag collection with more colorful pieces. In the past, I would always stick with the neutral colors because I felt that they were “safer” and easier to match with more of my outfits. After I got one colored bag though, I realized that I can actually wear it with a lot! Since then, I haven’t shyed away from colorful bags. I just got this new bright green (almost like a Tiffany blue actually) bag from Susu Handbags. I love that the shape is similar to that of Chanel’s boy bag! This one is very well-made, especially for the price it goes for. I may just have to go back and get one in red too. So fun to wear especially with my spring & summer wardrobe 🙂
