5 Reasons Why I Swear By Dry Shampoo

IMG_6263 2

This Sunday is National Dry Shampoo Day! Did you know that using dry shampoo has many great benefits? Not only does it save so much time, it also works wonders to keep hair looking and smelling fresh in between washes. While my mom always taught me to wash my hair everyday, I learned in recent years that over-washing can actually be detrimental. To be honest, I’ve always been a bit of a germaphobe in the sense where I wouldn’t feel comfortable getting into bed before a full shower. When I went blonde, my stylist suggested that I wash my hair only 2-3 times a week, and use dry shampoo in between washes to help maintain color among other things. To be honest, the thought gave me much anxiety (lol)! At first, I was hesitant because I thought, “How is dry shampoo considered shampoo if there’s no sudsing involved? It can’t possibly clean my hair the way real shampoo does.” After experimentation, I learned that this is half true — I wouldn’t live off of only dry shampoo for the rest of my life. But, at the same time, using dry shampoo in between washes like suggested has worked out pretty well. In case you aren’t familiar yet, dry shampoo comes in a spray or powder form and cleanses hair with oil absorbers like starch. It also provides some volume (yassss!) thanks to ingredients like silica. So, I don’t have to worry about oil build-up or flatness, which is my biggest concern when it comes to hair.

Personally, I prefer the spray form because it feels cleaner and not as heavy. Since I started incorporating dry shampoo into my routine, I’ve saved many mornings of hassle and styling. If you haven’t started using this amazing shower substitute, read on to find out why it has become my secret weapon for an instant refresh!

Save Water & Shower Time

Are you someone who is always crunched for time? I totally get it. Time is of the essence. This is why dry shampoo is literally my best friend for those mornings I just don’t have time to wash in the shower. It quickly soaks up any oil, leaving a fresh scent, so your head of hair feels and looks freshly washed. Your water bill will also thank you later.

Extend Your Style

Long gone are the days where I’d have to get up super early every morning to style my hair. Curling my hair daily was always a nightmare because it took forever and all that constant heat couldn’t have been healthy. Dry shampoo saves time and money because it preserves hair style well. For example, I’ll curl my hair one morning and the curls will hold up pretty well for two to three days. I just lightly spray some dry shampoo at the roots every morning to maintain the “fresh” look. Honestly, the curls look even better on the second or third day because they end up looking more relaxed. With dry shampoo, “lived in hair” and beach waves are achieved effortlessly!

Preserve Your Hair Color

If you color your hair regularly like I do, you’ll be delighted to learn that dry shampoo does a wonderful job at slowing down the color fading process. Most Asian blondes I know have to touch up and tone their hair every couple months. Me on the other hand? I only go into the salon once every 4-6 months because 1) hair coloring takes forever and 2) it can get expensive after a while. I love keeping things low-maintenance whenever I can, all the while saving some cash.

Get Natural Volume

Contrary to what I believed before I gave dry shampoo a chance, it actually does pretty well at “fluffing” flat hair. This is coming from an Asian who has naturally flat hair regardless of whether I wash my hair in the shower or not. One of the biggest benefits of dry shampoo that I love is the instant fullness I get from just a couple sprays!

Use Anytime, Anywhere

Dry shampoo is especially convenient when traveling because you can use it any time your hair needs a boost. Use it before bed to feel clean, before going to an event for an extra oomph, or in the morning for an instant refresh.

Do you use dry shampoo? What’s your favorite brand?

  1. I love dry shampoo too! Definitely saves a lot of time and keeps my hair routine easy and low-maintenance which I love. I need to try Klorane’s dry shampoo still though! How do you like it?

    1. I’m glad to hear you’re a fan as well! I love keeping things simple whenever I can and dry shampoo allows me to do that. I love Klorane’s dry shampoo! It’s lightweight, smells fresh, and gives my hair just enough volume 🙂

  2. Whoa I had no idea that there was such a day as National Dry Shampoo Day lol that’s pretty cool! I just know that this Sunday is daylight savings and I’m excited for that. My hair gets oily quickly so it’s hard for me to get away with not washing my hair everyday but maybe I will give dry shampoo a try and see how it works! Thank you for sharing.

    1. Haha yes! It’s also daylight savings and I’m stoked for that too 🙂 I have the same problem actually — my hair gets oily easily and quickly but I’m still able to use dry shampoo. Definitely worth a shot!

  3. I am always looking for dry shampoo that is actually going to do the job! My hair gets greasy really fast, so I’ll definitely have to try some of your fave ones! Thanks for sharing this post girl.

    1. Right now I’m obsessed with Klorane’s dry shampoo! Works so well and smells really fresh. I have the same issue with greasy hair but haven’t had too much problem with using dry shampoo every day and then just washing my hair in the shower 2-3x a week tops. 🙂

  4. Ooh I didn’t know it was National Dry Shampoo day – they have holidays for everything!
My dry shampoos of choice are the Living proof ones you mention here and also the Eva NYC ones as they also have a dry conditioner in their lines!

  5. I’m so curious to try a product like this. I hate washing my hair every other day. At the same time, my hair is so think I do not need the extra volume. But it seems like there are lots of options! Thanks for the info!

    1. Haha well, it’s not like the dry shampoo gives me a ton of volume — it just keeps my hair looking fresh and not weighed down so to speak. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you haven’t already!

  6. Wow, you’re an amazing writer. Everything read so easily. Anyway, dry shampoo seems interesting. I only wash once a week. Maybe I should invest in dry shampoo for when wash days end up being super busy.

    1. Aww thank you Olyvia! I’m glad that you find my post easy to read 🙂 I’d love to hear your thoughts on dry shampoo if you decide to give it a try! xx

  7. So, I had tried a bajillion dry shampoos before I literally JUST found the one I’ll use (and when I say “just”, I mean literally last week haha). I’m gonna start using Batiste to extend my style between washes. I hate going without washing my hair, but I know it’s better for my hair and better for my color! I gotta try a few of these other suggestions just to see how they work!

  8. Dry shampoo is SUCH a life saver! Especially on mornings when you have to get up super early, or on travel days. I love the Bumble & Bumble one and the one from DryBar!

  9. I had no idea there was a such thing as National Dry Shampoo Day, haha. I’ve only ever washed my hair every other day, but dry shampoo is definitely where it’s at when I’m pressed for time or need a pick-me-up!

    1. So lucky you’re able to get away with washing your hair every other day without using dry shampoo! Mine gets oily fast so dry shampoo is a must on days I don’t wash my hair in the shower.

  10. I am totally with you on washing everyday until the past few years. I’ve realized that by training my hair and not shampooing every day, I was able to use dry shampoo and not overdry my hair with so many washes. And like you, I like the idea of saving a little time in the morning not having to style my hair again and just adding dry shampoo for that clean smell and volume. It’s almost like salt spray for the hair, but also absorbs the grease. I haven’t tried Klorane but I’ve used Tresemme, Dry Bar and R+Co and actually really like Tresemme the best for the smell and volume. I like R+Co but I don’t like the smell as much as Tresemme. I will have to try Klorane though as I keep seeing people recommend it. xoxo, Christine

    1. I actually remember using the Tresemme one before too and the smell was great! The Klorane one has a great scent too and is my current go-to these days. I’m so glad that you are a fan of dry shampoo too! It’s definitely a great way to give our hair a break from constant washing. To my surprise it actually leaves my hair smelling and feeling fresh like I just got out of the shower… only I get to keep my curls for a few more days hahaha

    1. Yes! I couldn’t agree more. There are so many options now it’s hard to choose just one! Right now I am pretty settled on Klorane though because it works well and I love the scent 🙂

  11. I picked up a mini size during a trip to Europe! I love their dry shampoo, works like a charm! Perfect for days I don’t feel like doing the full wash (so annoying to dry your hair every time haha!)
